How to Register for TOCFL: Dates, Fees, Test Centers, and Exam Day (2026)

The TOCFL preparation content on this site — the Band A, B, and C guides, the roadmap, the vocabulary lists — all assume you’ve already decided to sit the exam. But registration is its own step, with its own timeline, costs, and paperwork. This guide covers the entire process: which format to pick, how to book your slot, what it costs, and what exam day actually looks like.

Formal Test or TOCFL CAT: Choose Before You Register

Two formats exist, and the choice shapes every subsequent step.

The formal test (正式考試) is what most students in Taiwan sit. You choose a specific level before you register: Level 1 or Level 2 (Band A), Level 3 or Level 4 (Band B), or Level 5 or Level 6 (Band C). Scores run on a 200–800 scale. Tests are held at scheduled dates throughout the year at fixed centers across Taiwan.

TOCFL CAT (電腦化適性測驗) is a computer-adaptive version where the system adjusts question difficulty based on your answers in real time. You don’t choose a level when registering — the algorithm places you. It covers Listening and Reading only, same as the formal test. The key advantage: results appear immediately after you finish. As of 2026, CAT is available at select overseas centers and at certain Taiwan venues; check the official site to confirm whether it’s offered at your preferred location.

For most MTC students and long-term Taiwan residents, the formal test is the default. CAT suits learners who want a quick diagnostic or who are taking the exam at an overseas center.

Before You Register: Know Your Level

Before paying the registration fee, confirm which band and level you are targeting. Read the relevant preparation guide:

2026 Test Dates in Taiwan

The formal TOCFL runs on weekends at multiple points across the year. Eight test windows are scheduled for 2026:

Registration Deadlines and Timeline

Plan your schedule working backward from the test date you want:

• 6–8 weeks before: Confirm which band and level you’re targeting. Read the band guide and do at least one timed practice set before you register — band selection is final once you pay.
• On the first day of the registration window: Log in and register. Popular Taipei centers sell out within 48–72 hours of the window opening.
• 2–3 weeks before the test: Check your confirmation email again and note the exact address of your center. If your name or ID number on the confirmation looks wrong, contact the TOCFL office immediately — corrections take time.

Fee Schedule

Refund policy: There are no refunds once registered. Some centers allow a single date-change request if you notify them within a specified window — check the terms at your specific center before registering if your schedule is uncertain. A no-show forfeits the full fee.

Step-by-Step Online Registration Walkthrough

Registration happens at tocfl.edu.tw/OS/. The interface is in Traditional Chinese; this walkthrough uses the field names as they appear on screen.

Before you start, gather:

• Your passport number or ARC number (居留證號碼)
• A digital passport-style photo (JPG, under 200KB, plain background — the site will reject photos with busy backgrounds or non-neutral expressions)
• The exact level you want to sit
• A credit card for payment (Visa and Mastercard accepted; some centers also accept ATM transfer, 超商 payment via ibon or FamiPort, or 郵局 bank transfer — the payment screen shows available methods for your selected center)

Step 1 — Create or log in to your account

Navigate to tocfl.edu.tw/OS/ and click 帳號登入/註冊. If you’ve sat TOCFL before, use your existing account. New accounts require your name (as it appears on your passport or ARC), email address, and phone number. You’ll receive a verification email; confirm it before proceeding.

Step 2 — Select your exam

After logging in, click 報名考試. The portal presents a list of upcoming test dates. Select the date you want. The next screen shows available test centers for that date along with seat counts. Centers marked 額滿 are full.

Step 3 — Choose your level

Select 正式考試 (formal test) or 電腦化適性測驗 (CAT). For the formal test, you then select your band and level from a dropdown. The system does not prevent you from selecting any level — if you register for Level 5 and you’re at a Band A stage, that’s your problem. Pick carefully.

Step 4 — Enter personal details and upload your photo

The form pre-fills from your account. Double-check your name against your passport or ARC. The romanisation must match exactly — if your passport says “CHEN MING-CHIH” and you type “Chen Mingzhi,” that is a discrepancy a proctor may flag. Upload your photo using the 上傳照片 button. The system previews it; confirm it’s legible.

Step 5 — Review and pay

A summary screen shows your selected date, center, level, and fee. Click 確認報名 to proceed to payment. Complete payment within the session — the system holds your seat for approximately 15 minutes during checkout. After payment, a confirmation page appears; print it or screenshot it.

Step 6 — Confirmation email

You’ll receive a confirmation email within a few minutes. The email contains your exam date, center address, start time, and registration number. Keep it. If you don’t receive it within 30 minutes, check your spam folder, then log in to your account — your registration should show under 我的報名記錄 if payment went through.

Test Centers in Taiwan

Taiwan hosts approximately 20 test centers, distributed across northern, central, and southern Taiwan. Taipei concentrates the most options — venues at major universities in the central and Da’an areas. Additional centers operate in New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.

When you register, you select a center from a dropdown that shows real-time seat availability. Popular centers fill quickly, particularly for May and July sessions when MTC students are between quarters and motivated to test. If you’re studying at MTC on Heping East Road, you’re a short 捷運 ride from multiple central Taipei centers. The portal lists the address of each center; check it against your commute before you commit.

International Test Centers

TOCFL is available outside Taiwan through a network of overseas test sites, primarily associated with Taiwan Education Centers (台灣教育中心) and Taiwanese diplomatic missions.

Regions with established test centers include:

• Japan: Tokyo and Osaka are the main sites; Fukuoka and Nagoya have also hosted sittings.
• United States: Offices of Taiwan Education affiliated with TECO (Taipei Economic and Cultural Office) in major cities; Los Angeles, New York, and Houston are recurring sites.

Important differences for overseas test-takers:

• Test dates are not the same as Taiwan dates. Overseas sessions are fewer — often one or two per year per country.
• Registration is handled through the local Taiwan Education Center or TECO office, not always through the main tocfl.edu.tw portal. Contact your nearest center directly to confirm their registration process.
• TOCFL CAT is more commonly offered overseas than the formal paper-based test, because CAT logistics are simpler to administer remotely.
• Fees are set locally. Budget for NT$2,000 equivalent plus any local administrative surcharges.

Exam Day

What to bring:

• Your original passport or ARC — not a photocopy, not your student ID, not your 健保卡, not a driver’s license. Proctors accept original government-issued documents only.
• Your registration confirmation (email printout or phone screen)

What not to bring into the test room:

• Mobile phones
• Smart watches or any electronic device
• Metal objects — pens and pencils are provided at the center

Arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled start time. The TOCFL runs on hard start times; late arrivals are not seated after the exam begins.

The exam is administered on a computer, even for the formal test. Listening comes first, then Reading. Total exam time is approximately two hours. There is no speaking or writing component in the standard TOCFL.

Bring water; test rooms can run cold. The exam does not pause once started.

Results and Your Certificate

Formal test results are published four to six weeks after the exam date, accessible through your TOCFL portal account. You’ll receive an email notification when scores are available.

From January 2026, TOCFL no longer issues paper certificates. All score reports and certificates are digital only, downloadable from your account as PDFs. If you need the certificate for a scholarship application, university admission, or ARC extension, download and save your certificate as soon as it’s available. The portal retains records for two years from the exam date; after that they may not be accessible.

Scores are valid for two years from the date of issue. For Taiwan scholarship applications — including the MOE Huayu Scholarship — Band B or higher is typically required as a minimum, though specific requirements vary by program and change year to year.

Re-Test Policy

There is no mandatory waiting period to re-sit the TOCFL — you can register for the next available session immediately after receiving your results. In practice, with four to eight test windows per year in Taiwan, you could sit again within six to eight weeks if a slot is available and you register promptly.

A few things to know about re-sitting:

• No limit on attempts: You can sit the same level multiple times. There is no restriction on the number of times you take a given level.
• Scores are not averaged: Only the result from your most recent sitting is on record; previous attempts are not averaged or combined. If you score higher on attempt two, that’s your score.
• Level switching between sittings: You can register for a different level the next time. Some learners who narrowly fail Level 4 drop back to Level 3 to secure a confirmed Band B pass, then attempt Level 4 again later.
• Score validity: Your most recent passing score is valid for two years from the issue date. If you’re collecting certificates for a scholarship application deadline, timing matters — you want your valid certificate to cover the full application window, not expire mid-process.
• Test fatigue and strategy: Sitting every session without intervening study rarely improves results. Most learners who re-sit within eight to twelve weeks without additional structured input see marginal improvement. Use the time between sittings to address your specific weak areas from the score report.
