What is the TOCFL?

The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) is administered by National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) on behalf of Taiwan's Ministry of Education. It is the definitive standard for measuring Mandarin proficiency in the context of Taiwanese culture, Traditional Chinese characters, and the Zhuyin / pinyin phonetic systems used in Taiwan.

The exam covers six levels — Novice 1 and 2 (Band A), Level 1 and 2 (Band B), and Advanced 1 and 2 (Band C) — each requiring mastery of a defined vocabulary set before progressing. Listening and reading are the core components at every level, with optional speaking and writing modules available for those who need a complete proficiency certificate.

TOCFL scores are accepted by Taiwanese universities as proof of language ability for international applicants, required for many government scholarships (including the MOFA Taiwan Scholarship), and increasingly recognised by employers and language institutions worldwide as the standard for Taiwan-focused Mandarin study.
